History of town Atabapo

On 22 February 1753, comes from Spain, the Real Issue of limits, known as the expedition of Solano, issued by King Ferdinand VI. In the year 1758 founded the town of San Fernando de Atabapo in honor of King. This picturesque site formed by the confluence of the Orinoco and Guaviare Atabapo.

It is the seat of an Indian village Guaypuinavi, who already had contact with the Portuguese conquerors, coming from the Amazon - Black River, via the arm Casiquiare. The expedition leader Don Jose Iturriaga agrees to Chief Curuzú (cruise), owner of the place, for use as home base for the expedition. In honor of King Ferdinand VI of Spain, puts the name of San Fernando del Rio Atabapo.

On 18 July 1822 promulgating the Constitution of the Republic in San Fernando de Atabapo and ten (10) days, establishing the first municipality in the canton of Black River. In 1856, the territory to be "Amazonas Province" with its capital in San Fernando de Atabapo, under the command of José Tadeo Monagas. Between 1880 and 1881, Guzman Blanco TF Amazonas divides in two, the Alto Orinoco TF with its capital in San Fernando de Atabapo and TF Amazonas Maroa its capital.

On 23 October 1893 Joaquín Crespo again established the union of the two (2) territories into one: the Amazonas Federal Territory, with its capital in San Fernando de Atabapo, a situation that lasts until 1928 when the capital was transferred to Puerto Ayacucho (Signi, 1988:41).

In the year 1908 comes to San Fernando de Atabapo, Colonel Jose Tomas Funes from Rio Chico, Miranda State now, he seized power in a coup, overthrowing Roberto Pulido and killing him on 8 March 1913. he dies later shot by Arévalo Cedeño on 30 January 1921. His term was characterized as the longest and bloodiest dictatorship known in Amazonas
