Atures and Maipures

The Maipures Atures and, according to legend were built by a desperate father who wanted to reclaim their children, victims of a curse.

On the banks of Atabapo lived a man whose belly was prominent in the extreme and which tore bits for fishing was, moreover, bound to observe the strictest secrecy regarding the use of that part of his body, failing which opposite was the victim of a terrible curse.

Such was his ability to fish, which surprised all who approached him and that just say the name that would catch fish at the time of launching the bait, he did it. One day touched by the kindness of her two children, told them the secret and added that each piece of navel which tore him lasted a month because the fish failed to eat. One morning when her children were bathing in the river, became dolphins, before their eyes. It was the punishment for having disclosed the secret.

Since that day in the morning, noon and evening the man came to the river bank and sang a song in which a dialogue with their children. But in course of time the song was losing its effect and the man realized that their children moved away towards the mouth of the Orinoco. Only in two places, in consequence of the large amount of stones, timber, logs, etc.. who had jumped into the river, was about to get the two-men vengaran dolphins.

They had built the Atures and pures.

From there he lost all hope as the currents took their children out to sea.
