COP15 - UN Climate Change 2009 in Copenhagen
The Governor's plan for zero deforestation - Eduardo Braga, governor of Amazonas state in Brazil: If the UN conference in Copenhagen succeeds in creating economic incentives for forest conservation, a senior at Amazon deforestation in 2020 is realistic.
An outline of Brazil has successfully reduced the rate of deforestation in the vast jungles of the Amazon.
Inspired by progress, Eduardo Braga, governor of Amazonas state, encourages participants in the UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen later this year to create financial incentives for projects that reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation (known as REDD).
"Copenhagen has to move to Kyoto, and the only way is through financing REDD. I think we can achieve zero deforestation in the Amazon around 2020, if we start REDD system, encourage and motivate her "said Mr. Braga Reuters.
The state of Amazonas has adopted a plan to compensate local communities to refrain from felling and encourage its citizens to participate in activities such as rubber tapping and fishing instead. The scheme is funded by several large companies.
According to the Governor, some 460 million USD in 2013 is necessary to expand the program into new areas and create buffer zones around existing projects. According to a study by McKinsey consultants, which cost around 7.8 billion dollars for Brazil to reduce deforestation to zero.
Of Brazil's current official target is to reduce by half the rate of deforestation of the Amazon in the next ten years.
