Park Duida Marawaca

In the southwestern part of Amazonas state and the Municipality Atabapo This is part of the autonomous municipality of Alto Orinoco, are located on Duida massif and the Serrania del Marawaka, united by a kind of great depression semiplana corridor or better high. This park covers an area of 210,000 hts. Limited by the Orinoco in the South, West and North Cunucunuma, Padamo the east. To the north is the hill-tepuy Wachamakare with an elevation of 1,700 meters. asl, which must be integrated into this park because it is part of the same ecosystem.

Among the various elevations of the largest Marawaka has 2900 mts. asl. As for the 3 peaks or elevations of Duida, the largest is 3,200 m. .. Referring to the area occupied by the plant Duida, it is 1,300 km ² and the Marahuaka or Marawaka is 1,240 km ². Both belong to the Guyana Shield, a geological formation whose age is estimated at about 1000 million years. A peculiarity of these tepuyes on its surface is that parts are crossed by narrow and deep cracks, up some 50 mts. more or less deep. Of fauna and flora can imagine the vast number of species new to science, pending botanical entomologists, and biologists in general ichthyologists that identify.

In the southern slope there Marawaka one of the most sacred sites by Aboriginal people care, it is the "Cave Anakaka, where grass grows a giant, with strong stems about 5 mts. high. Its interior is a smooth tube, without divisions, which use it to place it on the inside of the tube "mbi" of the gun, where deadly darts slide. The call Yekuana curata.

According to the famous botanist McGuire Basset, identifies it as Amphiphyllum Marahuacaea. It is conducive to remember that McGuire climbed together Huachmacari W. Phelps same scale and with this mist, where the highest peak was christened with the name of scientific merit ornithologist William Phelps. McGuire also went up the Orinoco, spend some time in the Indian village of Platanal (Magicoro-teri).

The author was able to visit in the company of Yekuana and Yanomami (Shirihianas) the magical river, a huge natural cavern. The few curata Yekuana collected, as instructed by the shaman who accompanied us. In much of the journey through this sacred region for several days, thunderstorms mainly succeeded. Friends tour leaders explained to me that was the god Wanadi we showed their distaste for our stay there. I thought that god has a bad temper, as lightning and thunder accompanied us forever.

Marahuaka We can say that could not be climbed on foot. In the foreword of the book "Marahuaka" the learned Dr. Anduze reminds us: "We may recall in 1969 to Walter Bonatti and Child Edgar Gonzalez, who has 4 Makiritare Waika and 4, tried to reach the summit, reaching only up to a height about 1000 mts., until the call Anakaka cave. They made another attempt, and González Niño Bonatti, three and seven Waika Makiritare, in 1973, unable to reach the summit because it does not grab the horns in the sandstone walls, reaching up to 2000 mts. Approximately where the cliff starts.

This set of tepuis have for the native inhabitants of that region the great importance of being the abode of their gods, so may be regarded as Makiritare or Yekuana Olympus. Among its many mythological stories highlighting the tree of life or the sacred tree, the Marahuaka.

Among this formidable pile heights are born a few streams of water to the bottom llagar to emerge in great leaps. Among these highlights he came to be seen from a height of approximately three thousand feet during the rainy season, but the crash in the fall with two cliffs, loses continuity, so it was not possible to say which is greater than the Churun Meru.

Al-Marahuaka Duida lelga is from Puerto Ayacucho, up the Orinoco to go after the Cunucunuma north or east Padamo, sailing to their headwaters that are on the very slopes of the massif. In La Esmeralda is a big clue in the savanna of Culebra (or Belen) a smaller one. Near the river falls to Padamo Kurujiaca that there is a small runway for light aircraft in Dewateña site. Another resource easy to reach the summit is to use the helicopter, since it has the advantage that the floor of the summit vegetation is sparse, but there is danger of high winds and sometimes heavy fog.
